It applies to families living in Scotland only. It is general information, and Social Security Scotland decides each application. Social Security Scotland says it is paid every four weeks, so a family receives &pound;112.80 every four weeks for each eligible child, with no limit on the number of children in a family who can get it. Social Security Scotland says the payment is reviewed each year, so it could increase. Mygov.scot says it is up to the family what to spend the money on, and that Scottish Child Payment does not affect any other UK or Scottish Government benefits received by anyone in the household. It says it is one of five family payments from Social Security Scotland, which include Best Start Grant.<\/p>\n<h2>Who can apply<\/h2>\n<p>Mygov.scot says a person may be able to get the payment if all of the following apply: they live in Scotland, they or their partner receive certain benefits, and they or their partner are the main person looking after a child under 16. A person can apply whether or not they are in work.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits that qualify are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Universal Credit;<\/li>\n<li>income-based Jobseeker&#8217;s Allowance; and, where the applicant alone is named on the claim, Pension Credit, Income Support or income-related Employment and Support Allowance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mygov.scot says Child Benefit on its own is not an accepted benefit. A person who has applied for a qualifying benefit but not yet received it can still apply. Social Security Scotland says it must wait for the qualifying benefit to be awarded before it can process the application, which must happen within 14 days of the Scottish Child Payment application. A sanction or deduction on a benefit does not affect the decision on the application, though it must be reported if it happens later, and the applicant needs to send details.<\/p>\n<h2>Who counts as the main carer<\/h2>\n<p>Mygov.scot says the main person looking after a child may be the birth parent, a partner living with the birth parent as a couple, married or civil partners, or the child&#8217;s kinship carer or their partner. To show this, the child must be named on the applicant&#8217;s or their partner&#8217;s claim for Child Benefit, Universal Credit or Pension Credit. Kinship carers need something to show they look after the child, either a letter from the local council or a copy of a legal order such as a Kinship Care Order, Residence Order or Guardianship order.<\/p>\n<p>If more than one person applies for the same child, mygov.scot says this is a double claim and Social Security Scotland has a process to decide who gets the payment, prioritising those with a benefit or care arrangement showing they are likely to be the main carer. Only one person can receive the payment for a child.<\/p>\n<h2>How to apply<\/h2>\n<p>Mygov.scot says applications can be made online, by phone or by post. Most people take about 10 to 20 minutes to complete the online form, which cannot be saved and resumed, so it must be finished in one sitting. The applicant needs their name, date of birth, address and National Insurance number, the children&#8217;s names and dates of birth, and, for a new application, their partner&#8217;s details including National Insurance number and bank details if they have an account. Phone applications are on 0800 182 2222 (8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday), and Social Security Scotland says it can arrange interpreters in over 100 languages. A family already receiving the payment can report a change to add a child.<\/p>\n<h2>After applying<\/h2>\n<p>If Social Security Scotland asks for a certificate, a legal order or a council letter, it needs these before it can finish checking the form. They can be uploaded online or posted as photocopies marked with the person&#8217;s full name, date of birth, National Insurance number and the words &#8220;Scottish Child Payment&#8221;, because missing information can delay payment.
