Here’s what actually matters, based on RoSPA’s safety guidance and the International Hip Dysplasia Institute’s positioning recommendations.

The main carrier types

Soft structured carriers (SSCs) — padded shoulder straps and a waistband, buckled fastenings. Generally the quickest to put on and take off, and a popular first choice for that reason.

Stretchy or woven wraps — a long length of fabric tied around the body. Very adjustable and popular for newborns, but have more of a learning curve to tie confidently and securely.

Ring slings — a single shoulder design that threads through a ring, quick for short trips and easy in-and-out use, but only support one shoulder at a time.

Meh dais and buckle-and-tie hybrids — a middle ground between a wrap and a fully buckled carrier, using a mix of ties and buckles.

There isn’t a single “best” type — it depends on how you’ll use it (quick trips vs. longer wear), your baby’s age, and how confident you feel tying a wrap versus clicking buckles.

Safety basics: the TICKS rule

RoSPA (the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) and the UK Sling Manufacturers and Retailers Consortium promote a simple safety check for any sling or carrier, known as TICKS:

Tight — the carrier should hold your baby snugly against you; loose fabric can let a baby slump into a position that restricts breathing.

In view at all times — you should be able to see your baby’s face just by glancing down, without having to loosen or open the carrier.

Close enough to kiss — your baby should be positioned high enough that you could kiss the top of their head.

Keep chin off the chest — there should be at least a finger-width of space under your baby’s chin, since a chin pressed to the chest can restrict their airway.

Supported back — your baby’s back should be held in a natural position, tummy and chest against you.

RoSPA specifically highlights that a sling’s fabric can obstruct a baby’s nose and mouth, and that the risk is highest when a baby is curled in a “C” shape low against the parent’s stomach rather than held upright and secure — which is exactly what the TICKS checks are designed to prevent. RoSPA also advises against breast or bottle feeding while a baby is in a sling or carrier, and recommends checking with a health professional first for a baby born prematurely or at a low birth weight.

Choosing a carrier that supports healthy hip positioning

The International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) recommends what it calls the “M-position” (also called the spread-squat or jockey position) for babywearing: thighs spread around the wearer’s body, hips bent so the knees sit slightly higher than the bottom, and the thighs supported along their full length — roughly 40–55° of hip abduction and 90–110° of hip flexion, though some natural variation is fine.

In practice, this means looking for a carrier with a seat wide enough to support your baby from knee to knee, not just underneath the bottom, so their knees sit visibly higher than their hips when worn. The IHDI also recommends facing your baby inward (toward you) for the first six months specifically, as the position most supportive of healthy hip development at that stage.

Newborns and carrier choice

Not every carrier is designed to fit a newborn safely straight away — some need a dedicated newborn insert, while others are built with an adjustable seat that narrows down for a smaller baby. Always check the manufacturer’s stated minimum age and weight for your specific carrier model, and follow their fitting instructions exactly, since TICKS and hip-healthy positioning both depend on the carrier actually being sized and adjusted correctly for your baby.

A few practical buying considerations

Adjustability — a carrier that adjusts to fit both parents comfortably (if more than one person will be wearing it) saves buying two.

Breathable fabric — worth prioritising if you expect to use it through warmer months, given how much body heat a carrier holds in.

Weight rating — check how long the manufacturer expects the carrier to remain usable as your baby grows, so you’re not replacing it within a few months.

Ease of solo use — if you’ll often be getting a wriggling baby in and out alone, a carrier you can confidently buckle single-handed makes daily life considerably easier than one that needs two people or a lot of practice.

Sources

RoSPA — Baby sling safety advice

International Hip Dysplasia Institute — Baby Wearing

Baby carrier types compared, RoSPA’s TICKS safety rule explained, and how to choose one that supports healthy hip positioning.

[1

post-11462","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized-en-gb
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
