This guide covers everyday newborn skin care — what to use, what to avoid, and when it’s worth simply asking a health visitor or GP rather than guessing.

Vernix: leave it be

Many babies are born with vernix, the creamy white coating that protects their skin in the womb. NHS guidance is clear that vernix should be left on the skin after birth to absorb naturally rather than washed off — it continues to offer protective and moisturising benefits in the first hours and days.

Why fewer products is better early on

A newborn’s skin barrier is still maturing, and NHS advice reflects a “less is most definitely more” approach: it’s generally better to avoid skin cleansing and moisturising products for the first few weeks, giving the skin time to develop its natural protective function before introducing additional products. For babies born prematurely, this window is longer — skin products are typically avoided for six to eight weeks, since a premature baby’s skin barrier takes longer to mature.

This doesn’t mean bathing is off the table. Plain water is generally sufficient for newborn bathing in the early weeks, and when a mild wash product is eventually introduced, it should be one specifically formulated for babies, used sparingly.

Baby wipes: timing matters

NHS guidance recommends avoiding baby wipes until a term baby is at least two to four weeks old. Cotton wool and water are the preferred option before that point. When wipes are used, they should be mild and free from alcohol and perfume to minimise the risk of irritation to still-developing skin.

Nappy area care

The nappy area needs slightly different handling, given how frequently it’s exposed to moisture and irritants. NHS guidance recommends cleansing the area with water whenever the nappy is changed, alongside using good-quality, super-absorbent nappies to reduce prolonged skin contact with urine and stool. Frequent changes and some nappy-free time can also help keep skin comfortable.

Nappy rash is common, and if you notice any redness or soreness developing, that’s a good prompt to talk to your health visitor or pharmacist about it directly — they can recommend the right product for your baby rather than guessing from general advice, and can check anything that looks unusual.

Skin-to-skin contact

Alongside the practical care guidance, NHS resources also highlight skin-to-skin contact as valuable in its own right in the early days — helping regulate a newborn’s temperature, heart rate and breathing, and supporting bonding and, where relevant, breastfeeding establishment. This is a separate benefit from the product-care advice above but forms part of the same broader NHS “Best Start in Life” guidance for new parents.

When to speak to a professional

Newborn skin does a lot of normal adjusting in the first few weeks, and much of it settles on its own. But this article isn’t a substitute for a proper assessment — if anything about your baby’s skin concerns you, or simply doesn’t look the way you expected, your midwife, health visitor, GP or NHS 111 are the right people to ask, rather than trying to work it out from general descriptions online.

The takeaway

Newborn skin generally needs far less intervention than the volume of baby skincare products on shelves might suggest. Water, time, and a minimal, fragrance-free approach in the early weeks reflect current NHS guidance — and when you’re ever unsure whether something needs attention, a health visitor or GP is a better source than trial-and-error with products.

Choosing products, once you do introduce them

When you do start introducing wash or moisturising products beyond plain water, look for ones specifically formulated and labelled for newborn or sensitive skin, fragrance-free where possible, and introduce only one new product at a time so it’s easy to spot if something doesn’t agree with your baby’s skin. It’s also worth being cautious about product marketing generally — something being branded and marketed for babies doesn’t automatically make it appropriate for the first few weeks of life simply because of that branding; the “less is more” principle in current NHS guidance applies regardless of how a product is marketed.

Sources

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust — Skincare for newborn babies

NHS Start for Life — Skin-to-skin contact with your newborn

NHS guidance on newborn skin care: why less is more in the first weeks, how to handle vernix and dry skin, and treating nappy rash correctly.

[1

post-11448","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized-en-gb
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
