The ticketing, though, has a few quirks that catch new parents out, especially the rules for children under five and the way a Family & Friends Railcard works when your only child is a baby. This guide covers train travel in Great Britain, using National Rail and individual train companies’ own published pages.

Babies and under-fives travel free

National Rail says children under five travel for free on most journeys, but it advises checking with your train company to be sure. The catch is seating. National Rail says a child under five travelling without a ticket may only occupy a seat that is not needed by a fare-paying passenger, and that you cannot reserve a seat for them. If you want a reserved seat for a small child, National Rail says you can buy a child-rate ticket, which comes with a seat reservation where one is available and carries a 50% discount on most tickets. On a busy commuter service, that reservation can be worth paying for.

What children aged 5 to 15 pay

For older siblings, National Rail says children aged 5 to 15 get 50% off most tickets. It also suggests that children who look older than 16 carry ID, such as a free Child Rate Photocard from a staffed National Rail station. That is useful to know if you are travelling with a baby and a tall ten-year-old.

How a Family & Friends Railcard works with a baby

The Family & Friends Railcard is designed for families with children, and National Rail says up to four adults and four children can travel together on one card, with adults saving a third and children’s tickets costing 60% less. The rules matter when you have a baby:

The railcard’s own eligibility page says two adults can be named as cardholders, and you need to be travelling with at least one child aged 5 to 15 to get the discount.

Under-fives travel free, and each adult can have up to two under-fives with them.

If the only child in your group is under five, the railcard’s FAQ says you need to buy that child a discounted child ticket so that the adults can use the railcard discount.

All child fares are subject to a £1 minimum fare, according to the railcard’s eligibility page.

So a couple with a newborn and no other children will not get railcard savings simply by holding the card, but buying the baby a child ticket can unlock them. It is worth working out the sums for your usual routes before you buy the card, and checking the current price on the railcard site.

Pushchairs and prams on board

Pushchair rules are set by each train company rather than nationally, and they differ in a small but important way:

LNER says pushchairs need to be folded or collapsed before boarding, and stored in a luggage rack, a cupboard or the gap between seats, without blocking doors or aisles.

CrossCountry says pushchairs and prams are welcome on board, and asks you to fold them after boarding and store them with luggage. It adds that boarding and alighting is safer and easier if your child is secured in the pushchair, and suggests turning to face into the train and stepping backwards onto the platform, gradually pulling the pushchair towards you.

The practical lesson is to check your operator’s luggage page before you travel, and to choose a pushchair you can fold quickly with one hand while holding a baby or a bag.

Overnight trains

If you are considering a sleeper service, National Rail sets out the rules for children. Where children travel in sleeper accommodation, they must either share a room with another member of their travelling party or have sole occupancy of a room, and in the latter case an accompanying adult must be travelling in the same coach. Children in seated accommodation must be accompanied by an adult in the seated coach. National Rail points you to its sleeper trains page or your train company for more, so check the detail for your service before you book.

Packing for the journey

This part is our own practical suggestion rather than anything a rail operator prescribes. Keep a small changing bag on your lap rather than in the overhead rack, so that nappies, wipes, a spare outfit and a snack are within reach. Choose your seat when you can: a table seat gives you a surface for changing or snacks, and being near the door makes boarding simpler. Leave a little extra time at the station, because lifts, stairs and platform changes all take longer with a baby and a folded pushchair.

The bottom line

Train travel with a baby is cheap and civilised once you know the rules: under-fives travel free, a child ticket buys a reservation, a railcard can help if you buy that child ticket, and pushchair storage depends on your operator. Check your operator’s pages, plan for a quick fold, and the journey itself is usually the easy part.

Sources

National Rail, “Train Travel with Children”

Family & Friends Railcard, “Are you eligible”

Family & Friends Railcard, “My child is under five.
