A pushchair that glides round one National Trust garden may have to be left at the door of the next. The Trust’s own pages for six places in England show how much the rules vary between properties, from a pushchair park beside the house toilets to a request to use a baby carrier instead. This guide compares those six pages, read on 25 October 2026. Opening times, prices and rules can change, so the property page should be checked before a visit. Comparable guides on this site cover English Heritage sites et Woodland Trust woods.

Where the pushchair stays outside

At Cragside the Trust says narrow corridors mean it cannot accommodate buggies and pushchairs in the house, and asks visitors to use a front carrier because of limited head space and to protect items on display. A buggy park is available next to the house toilets, where buggies and prams are left at the visitor’s own risk and free lockers are available in the same room.

Sissinghurst applies a similar rule to its garden rather than its house: because of narrow pathways, pushchairs are not allowed in the main garden but carriers are welcome. Hidcote does not use the word “not allowed”, but recommends a baby carrier rather than a pram or pushchair because of its narrow paths and uneven surfaces. At Buckland Abbey, visitors to the house are invited to leave buggies, large bags and baby carriers with the volunteer at the entrance door, and the page notes a lot of stairs inside.

Where wheels are welcome

Uppark’s page says pushchairs can be taken round the grounds, and into the house if the wheels are clean, with the downstairs reached via the lift. A front carrier is also welcome, and the pushchair can be left at the house entrance. Buckland Abbey says some parts of its yellow estate route, about one mile, are suitable for robust pushchairs, and that its shop and coffee shop are accessible for buggies; high chairs are listed in the coffee shop. The page adds that the natural play area is not accessible for buggies and recommends a baby carrier there.

Cliveden describes a level access route around the formal gardens. The wider estate has steps and steep slopes without handrails, especially down to the unfenced riverside, and its volunteer-led history walks include inclines and steps and may not be suitable for pushchairs.

Carriers, loans and water

Two of the six pages mention items to borrow: Hidcote lends hip seats from Visitor Reception, and Cragside says it can provide a Hippy Chick baby carrier. Neither page gives details of availability. Hidcote also notes areas of open water across the site and says children should be supervised at all times; Sissinghurst’s page lists unfenced lakes, moat and ponds around the estate, and Cliveden mentions unfenced lakes and ponds.

Questions parents ask

Are children under five charged?

The Hidcote, Buckland Abbey, Cragside, Sissinghurst and Cliveden pages each say that children under five go free; Buckland Abbey and Cragside word it as members and under 5s entering free. Uppark’s page does not say, so its entry details are worth checking.

Is every property the same?

No. In these six pages alone, the answers range from pushchairs allowed in the house, if wheels are clean, to no pushchairs in the garden.

Does the Trust say what to bring?

Not in a single list. The six pages describe facilities property by property, each in its own wording.

The bottom line

For these six English properties, the National Trust pages put pushchairs in very different places: welcome in the grounds at Uppark, parked at the door at Buckland Abbey and Cragside, and kept out of the main garden at Sissinghurst, with Hidcote recommending a carrier. Baby changing is listed at all six. Five of the six pages mention baby carriers, and the property page is the place to confirm the current position.
