Walk into any baby aisle, or scroll any baby-brand Instagram feed, and it can look like a newborn needs fifty different products before they even come home from hospital. In reality, the list of things a baby genuinely needs<\/em> in the first few months is much shorter than the list of things that get marketed to new parents. This guide separates the two, so you can spend your budget on what matters and skip what doesn’t.<\/p>\n

What a new baby actually needs<\/h2>\n

Strip it back to essentials and a newborn’s requirements fall into a handful of categories: somewhere safe to sleep, a way to travel safely by car and on foot, clothing, feeding equipment, and nappy-changing basics. Everything else is a “nice to have” that can wait until you know your baby and your routine.<\/p>\n

Safe sleep<\/h3>\n

You don’t need a nursery full of matching furniture on day one; you need one safe place for your baby to sleep, in your room, for the first six months.<\/p>\n

Travel<\/h3>\n

A rear-facing car seat that’s correctly fitted is a legal requirement before you can even drive your baby home from hospital, and a pram or travel system is close behind it in priority for most families. Clothing<\/h3>\n

Newborns grow fast \u2014 often out of “newborn” size within a matter of weeks \u2014 so buying a huge wardrobe upfront rarely pays off. A small rotation of vests, sleepsuits, a couple of weather-appropriate outer layers, scratch mitts and a hat covers most needs. Many parents find they lean much more heavily on 0\u20133 month sizing than “newborn,” so keep the newborn pile deliberately small.<\/p>\n

Feeding<\/h3>\n

Whether you’re breastfeeding, formula feeding, or a combination, the actual equipment list is short. Nappy changing<\/h3>\n

Nappies, wipes, a changing mat and nappy cream. That’s genuinely it for the basics \u2014 a dedicated changing table is a convenience, not a requirement, and plenty of parents manage perfectly well with a mat on top of a chest of drawers or on the floor.<\/p>\n

What’s marketed hard but isn’t essential for everyone<\/h2>\n

None of the items below are “bad” \u2014 plenty of families find real value in some of them \u2014 but they’re optional, not essential, and it’s worth knowing that before you feel pressured to buy them all at once:<\/p>\n
