Here’s what’s actually required, and what the evidence supports beyond the legal minimum.

The legal basics

In the UK, children must normally use an appropriate child car seat until they’re either 135cm tall or 12 years old, whichever comes first — after that, an adult seatbelt is permitted. Below that, the seat has to be appropriate for the child’s height or weight, and fitted correctly; simply having “a car seat” isn’t enough if it’s the wrong stage or badly fitted.

i-Size (R129) vs the older weight-based system

Traditionally, seats were chosen by your child’s weight (the ECE R44 standard). Newer i-Size (R129) seats are chosen by height instead, are required to be ISOFIX-fitted, and include mandatory side-impact testing that the older standard didn’t require. Both systems remain legal to buy and use in the UK, but i-Size seats build in more recent safety requirements, which is why most seats sold new now are i-Size.

The one legally binding difference that trips people up: under i-Size rules, a child must remain rear-facing until at least 15 months old. Under the older R44 rules, a baby could legally be turned forward-facing once they passed 9kg, often well before their first birthday. If you’re using or buying an i-Size seat, 15 months rear-facing is the legal floor, not just a recommendation.

Why “the legal minimum” and “the safest option” differ here

This is one of the clearer cases where going beyond the legal minimum has real backing: a rear-facing seat spreads crash forces across the back, shoulders and head far more effectively than a forward-facing one, because in most car accidents (which are frontal or near-frontal) a rear-facing child’s head and neck are supported by the seat shell rather than thrown forward. Because of this, expert and clinical guidance — including analysis published in the British Medical Journal — generally recommends keeping children rear-facing well beyond the 15-month legal minimum, up to around age 4 where the seat allows it, rather than switching them forward-facing as soon as it becomes legally permitted.

Choosing the right seat for your child’s stage

Newborn to around 15 months (minimum): rear-facing infant or i-Size seat, ideally ISOFIX-fitted rather than belt-fitted, since ISOFIX removes the risk of incorrect belt routing.

Toddler stage: an extended rear-facing seat if possible, moving to forward-facing only once your child has outgrown the rear-facing seat’s height or weight limit — not simply once they reach the legal age.

Booster stage: once a child outgrows a full harnessed seat, a high-back booster that positions the adult seatbelt correctly across the shoulder and hip, rather than the neck and stomach, until they reach 135cm or 12 years old.

Fitting mistakes that matter most

Independent checks consistently find a high proportion of car seats in everyday use are fitted or adjusted incorrectly. The most common, most consequential mistakes are:

Harness straps too loose. You should not be able to pinch a fold of webbing at the shoulder once the harness is tightened — if you can, it’s too loose.

Chest clip positioned too low. It should sit level with the armpits, not down near the stomach.

Seat not tightly secured to the car. Whether fitted with ISOFIX or a seatbelt, there should be minimal movement (rock-test with a firm hand at the seat’s belt path) once installed.

Bulky coats worn under the harness. A thick winter coat compresses in a crash, effectively loosening the harness at the exact moment it needs to be tight — put the coat on over the tightened harness instead, or use a thin fleece underneath.

If you’re at all unsure whether your seat is fitted correctly, many UK fire stations, some retailers and some local councils offer free car seat safety checks — it’s worth using one, since a seat that’s the right model but wrongly fitted loses much of its protective value.

Sources

GOV.UK – Child car seats: the rules

RoSPA – Child car seat safety advice

THINK!
