The NHS publishes a hospital bag checklist, and this guide turns it into a calm, organised packing plan. It is about kit and organisation only, and your own maternity unit may have its own list or rules on what to bring, so it is worth checking with them.<\/p>\n\n<h2>When to pack<\/h2>\n<p>The NHS notes that only about one in twenty babies arrives on their due date, and suggests packing the bag at least three weeks ahead so you are ready if your baby decides to make an early appearance. A sensible way to use that window is to pack the bag in stages: the obvious items first, then a final top-up of chargers and toiletries in the last week.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What the NHS suggests packing for you<\/h2>\n<p>The NHS checklist for the mother includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>your birth plan and hospital notes;<\/li>\n<li>loose, comfortable clothing, a dressing gown, and slippers or flip-flops (which the NHS notes are also good for the shower);<\/li>\n<li>nightwear, front-opening or loose-fitting if you are going to breastfeed;<\/li>\n<li>three changes of comfortable clothes and socks;<\/li>\n<li>five or six pairs of knickers, where disposable ones may be useful;<\/li>\n<li>two or three comfortable bras, including nursing bras if you plan to breastfeed, plus breast pads;<\/li>\n<li>two packets of super-absorbent sanitary or maternity pads;<\/li>\n<li>a wash bag with the usual toiletries, plus hair bands, hand sanitiser and body lotion;<\/li>\n<li>towels and your own pillows;<\/li>\n<li>an eye mask, which the NHS says may help you sleep on a brightly lit ward;<\/li>\n<li>healthy snacks and drinks, and a water bottle, ideally one with a straw;<\/li>\n<li>a fan or water spray to help keep you cool;<\/li>\n<li>books, magazines, podcasts or playlists to pass the time;<\/li>\n<li>a phone and charger, where an extra-long cable or a battery pack can be handy;<\/li>\n<li>spare glasses or contact lenses if you wear them, and a spare bag for washing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The full NHS list also includes a few personal items that vary from person to person. We have left those out here; follow the NHS list and your maternity unit&#8217;s guidance for them.<\/p>\n\n<h2>What to pack for the baby<\/h2>\n<p>For your baby, the NHS suggests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bodysuits, vests and sleepsuits;<\/li>\n<li>an outfit for going home in;<\/li>\n<li>a hat, scratch mittens, and socks or booties;<\/li>\n<li>a snowsuit if the weather is cold;<\/li>\n<li>nappies, and cotton wool or wipes;<\/li>\n<li>muslin squares and a blanket or shawl;<\/li>\n<li>a car seat for the trip home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The car seat is the item most likely to be forgotten, because it sits in the boot rather than the bag. Fit it and practise clipping it in before the big day. Our guide to car seat safety and UK law covers the legal side in more detail.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Planning for going-home day<\/h2>\n<p>The NHS list has a going-home theme running through it: an outfit to go home in, a hat, mittens and socks or booties, a snowsuit if the weather is cold, and the car seat. It is worth treating the going-home outfit as its own small project. Lay out the baby&#8217;s outfit, your own comfortable clothes and the car seat on the same day you finish packing, and put the outfits in their own labelled pouch so they can be found quickly on the day. Check the car seat&#8217;s instruction manual so that you know how to adjust the harness and fit it in your car. These suggestions are ours rather than the NHS&#8217;s, and if a friend or relative is collecting you, it helps to tell them in advance which bag is which.<\/p>\n\n<h2>A few things for your birth partner<\/h2>\n<p>The NHS also lists items for a birth partner, including a change of clothes, toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant, a phone and charger, a camera or camcorder, snacks and drinks, and spare change for the car park and vending machine. That last one is a classic: a pocket of coins saves a partner a frantic hunt at the pay machine.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Organising the bag so you can find things<\/h2>\n<p>The following ideas are our own practical suggestions rather than NHS advice. Use three separate bags or packing cubes: one for you, one for the baby, and one for your partner. Put a going-home outfit for each of you in a separate labelled pouch, so it is not buried under everything else. Keep chargers, wipes and snacks near the top, and put a printed list in the front pocket so a partner can check things off in a hurry. If you are lucky enough to be packing early, do a trial run by picking the bag up: a bag you can barely lift is not a bag you will want to carry.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>A hospital bag does not need to be elaborate. Start from the NHS checklist, tailor it to your own comfort and your maternity unit&#8217;s guidance, pack a few weeks early, and keep the car seat and chargers on your final checklist.
